Short answer: soak the decal in lukewarm water for 30 to 60 seconds, until the film slides off the paper. Slide it onto the clean piece and press out the water and air bubbles with a rubber squeegee. Leave it to dry overnight, then fire it at the decal’s temperature. If you prefer, Decalcer can apply and fire the decals for you.
What you need
Decals, the clean piece, a bowl of lukewarm water, a rubber squeegee or soft sponge, a lint-free cloth and access to a ceramic kiln.
Step by step
- Prepare the piece. It must be clean, dry and grease-free. Wipe it with alcohol or a degreaser.
- Cut out the decal, leaving a small margin around the design.
- Soak in lukewarm water for 30 to 60 seconds, until the film slides on the paper.
- Position it. Hold the paper against the piece and slide the decal into place.
- Remove water and bubbles from the centre outwards with the squeegee or sponge. Trapped bubbles cause defects in firing.
- Dry thoroughly, ideally overnight.
- Fire with a slow temperature rise and good ventilation at the start, so the film burns off cleanly. Then go up to the decal’s temperature: around 820 °C for low fire, up to 1200 °C for high fire, 520 °C for glass.
Common mistakes
- Water or bubbles under the decal, which cause gaps and stains.
- Raising the temperature too quickly.
- Dust or grease on the piece, which stops the decal from bonding.
- Firing before the decal is completely dry.
